Vegan breakfast in Ohrid

Breakfast is where vegans usually struggle in a Balkan town, because the default morning plate is built on eggs, cheese and pastry. At BITE the morning menu has four things that are vegan exactly as they come.

  • Chia Meal with cashew milk — banana, raspberry, agave and granola, 170 den.
  • Choco Chia Meal with almond milk — the same with cocoa, 180 den.
  • Berry Chia Meal with almond milk — 180 den.
  • Guacamole Toast on homemade sourdough — 250 den, if you want something savoury.

The fruit salad (apple, orange, raspberry, strawberry, banana and pineapple, 200 den) is vegan too. The oat meals are not — each comes with a scoop of protein and some with greek yogurt — and neither is the smoothie bowl, which is built on greek yogurt.

A full vegan lunch without asking for swaps

Three savoury dishes are vegan by design rather than by subtraction, so you are eating the dish as the kitchen intends it, not a version with half the ingredients taken out.

  • Falafel Wrap — homemade hummus, avocado, carrot, olives, tomato, cucumber and iceberg in a tortilla, 230 den.
  • Hummus Sandwich — hummus, avocado, tomato, cucumber and seeds, 220 den.
  • Vitamin Mix salad — iceberg, carrot, beetroot, tomato, cucumber, seeds, beans and chickpeas, 240 den.

The Vitamin Mix is the one to order if you want something filling: beans and chickpeas make it a meal rather than a side. Pair it with a Green juice and you have lunch for 430 denars.

Coffee without dairy

Espresso, double espresso, americano and tea are vegan as served, and so are three of the iced coffees: iced americano, freddo espresso and cold brew. Everything else on the coffee menu that comes with milk — macchiato, cappuccino, latte and the iced lattes, including the tiramisu latte — can be made with cashew milk for 40 denars extra. Matcha, hot or iced, takes cashew milk the same way.

Two cold coffees cannot be made vegan, because ice cream is the point of them: the Ice Coffee and the Affogato.

Cashew milk is printed on the menu, not something you have to ask for — that is what makes the whole coffee list available to a vegan.

Juices and smoothies that are vegan

All four single-fruit juices (orange, apple and carrot at 170 den, pineapple at 220) and all seven juice mixes are vegan. The Green mix — spinach, cucumber, apple, ginger and lemon, 190 den — is the most useful of them on a hot afternoon.

Among the smoothies, four are vegan: Berry Blast, Brown Energy (peanut butter, banana, cocoa and dates), Velvet Energy and Green Machine with spirulina, from 190 to 220 den. Watch for honey in the Bite and Ginger Rush smoothies and greek yogurt in the Refresher. The milkshakes contain milk and ice cream.

The five protein smoothies are not labelled vegan. Some contain greek yogurt or milk, and we have not confirmed that the protein powder itself is plant-based, so we would rather not claim it.
