Where to Eat Healthy in Ohrid

What “healthy” means on holiday in Ohrid

Ohrid eats well, but the visitor’s default is grilled meat, bread, cheese and a late dinner by the lake. After a few days of that most people want one meal that is mostly vegetables, a juice that is actually fruit, or a breakfast that is not pastry. That is the gap this guide is about.

BITE: healthy food all day

BITE is a healthy-food cafe built around one idea: the whole menu, from 08:00 to 22:00, every day. There are eight salads (200–290 den), two bowls, fifteen sandwiches, wraps and sourdough toasts, four oat meals, three chia meals, and a full juice and smoothie bar.

  • Most filling: the Protein salad — chicken breast, egg, quinoa, avocado, tomato, cucumber and onion, 290 den.
  • Most ordered: the Avocado salad with egg, cucumber, tomato and olives, 230 den.
  • For fish: the Salmon bowl with avocado, egg, carrot, cucumber, tomato and sesame, 300 den.
  • For vegans: the Vitamin Mix salad with beans and chickpeas, 240 den, or the Falafel wrap, 230.
  • 93items on the menu
  • 31fully vegan
  • 14 hopen every day

Drop: smoothies and bowls to go

Drop is a takeaway coffee shop and juice bar in Ohrid with smoothies, milkshakes, grain and salad bowls, sandwiches and house-made healthy snacks, and it offers almond and cashew milk. It is a good choice if you want something blended to carry down to the lake. Drop does not have a website, so check its Facebook page for current opening hours before you go.

Traditional dishes that fit a lighter day

You do not have to leave Macedonian food behind to eat lightly. Shopska salad — tomato, cucumber, pepper and onion under grated white cheese — is on almost every traditional menu in town and is a meal in summer. Tavče gravče, beans baked in a clay dish, is filling, cheap and vegetarian in most kitchens, though some versions include meat, so ask. Grilled vegetables and fresh fish are easy to find near the lake.

A healthy day in Ohrid, in practice

  • Breakfast early, before the heat: a chia meal or an oat meal from 08:00.
  • Water and a cold-pressed juice in the afternoon — the Green mix (spinach, cucumber, apple, ginger, lemon) is 190 den.
  • One vegetable-led meal a day: a salad or a bowl at lunch, and dinner on the lake as planned.
  • If you are staying in an apartment, order a salad or bowl through Wolt or Korpa.mk instead of cooking.
